 | | | | | | Among the surgical disciplines, the treatment of spinal injuries is one of the most inconsistent and least documented. The lack of standard training for U.S. spinal surgeons and a shortage of independently collected data on successful versus unsuccessful outcomes have resulted in wide variations in diagnostic approaches and treatment methods. As an unfortunate result, many neck and back surgeries are unnecessarily or incorrectly performed each year. |
|
| | | | | - From 25,000 to 50,000 failed back surgery syndrome cases occur each year.
- Low back disability costs U.S. industry $30 billion to $60 billion a year. Some 93 million work days are lost each year to spinal injuries.
- Patients who are off work six months have just a 50% chance of returning; two years, 0.2%.
